Ashburn High Schools Head to State Championship Games 🏈
The two Ashburn high schools (separated by less than 3 miles) will compete for state glory this weekend. Both teams won tightly contested semi-final matchups and will travel south for their championship challenge.
Region 5D Champion Stone Bridge held on for a 28-26 victory over the perennial powerhouse from Richmond, Highland Springs. It was quite the dramatic finish as the undefeated Bulldogs stopped the Springers from converting a 2-point conversion late in the 4th quarter of the Class 5 Semifinals that would have tied the game.
Region 4C Champion Broad Run also relied on 4th quarter heroics from a pair of seniors to squeak by the 10-time state champion Salem Spartans. A 13-yd TD strike in the final minute of regulation was just enough to rally past Salem for a 28-24 road win in the Class 4 semifinals.
Broad Run has not competed for a state championship since 2009. Stone Bridge, on the other hand, will attempt to defend their 2020 title. Both teams are vying to win their third overall state championship tomorrow.
