A Pair of Thrilling State Championships
Our Stone Bridge Bulldogs lost their last football game two years ago. That tightly contested 2019 VA Class 5 State Championship game ended 28-21 in favor of the Maury Commodores. Saturday, our Bulldogs finally got the opportunity to avenge that defeat.
Old Dominion University’s S.B. Ballard stadium hosted Virginia State Title Games for the first time in over 30 years. Just a few miles from Maury’s campus in downtown Norfolk, the home crowd showed up en masse to support the Commodores pursuit of another State Championship and were certainly delighted that our Bulldogs never led in regulation. And then they weren’t.
The game clock read 0:00 when junior wide receiver Zeke Wimbush dove into the endzone after catching a 37-yd pass from senior quarterback Jacob Thomas. The final play of the game secured Stone Bridge’s victory!
The Stone Bridge High School football program has now won 24 consecutive games, including back-to-back state championships and will look forward to their chance at a three-peat in next year.
Cross-town rival, Broad Run, also competed for a state title on Saturday, against the Varina Blue Devils, but fell just short in a 28-21 loss. Our Spartans fought an uphill battle, but an early 21-point deficit proved too much to overcome despite a furious 4th quarter comeback. An interception in the endzone with less than a minute to go gave the Blue Devils their first State Championship since 1999.
